The inimitable Landshark will keep you on the edge of dry land Monday through Friday from 4-8 pm (Arizona Time) on Deep Oldies.  With his main squeeze Moonflower and pet dog Cujo, he will keep you in stitches with his wily, wet humor! Email him at landshark@deepoldies.com

Landshark was born on Dry Land to three rich hippie parents. From birth Landshark found himself drawn to the beach and water. In his early teens he began being thrown out of neighbors’ pools and bathtubs. Which eventually led to a court order requiring Landshark to live within 50 miles of the beach. Soon Landshark began cruising the beaches of southern Cali only to find he needed money. Being a stand-up Shark comedian led to radio.

Since the late 70’s until present Landshark has frequented the beaches of the upper eastern seaboard to south Florida and the Gulf. Of course, So Cal is still by far his favorite! Now Landshark runs an internet radio station which bears the name of his birthplace, Arizona’s Real Rock Radio. During his off time he patrols the beaches and coves looking for unsuspecting listeners who need a dose of Deep Oldies. Remember if you meet him on the street be prepared to give up an appendage or at least buy him a refreshing beverage! (btw his favorite beverage: Cherry Coke Zero). Hear Landshark Weekdays 4-8pm (MST).

Former Radio Free Phoenix  DJ, Mariah Fleming, joins Deep Oldies Monday through Friday from 8pm – 12 Midnight. Mariah replaces Charlie Ram, who has left Deep Oldies for a new adventure elsewhere.  We wish Charlie luck!

Mariah is a third generation Arizona native, had her first “aha!” moment about radio at the plucky age of five when she discovered a translucent red 45 in her best friend’s dad’s record collection. When Mariah found out he played all those records the radio, she knew it was her destiny. When she shared her dream with Mr. DJ dad, with a condescending guffaw he informed her “Girls are not allowed to be on the radio!” Never tell an Irish redhead she “can’t” do something. Mariah’s passion for rock and roll hid beneath her strict Catholic school persona until her family moved from Tucson to Phoenix. At 14 she discovered the ‘big city’ and flipped between top forty rivals KRIZ and KRUX.  Her grandmother bought her a transistor radio complete with earpiece and leather case (perfect for hiding the radio under the bedcovers.) Then in the late ’60’s she discovered Little Willie Sunshine (Bill Compton) on the “KRUX Underground.” Bill Compton told her girls could too be in radio!
Compton nudged along the performer in Mariah by arranging her first studio recording of original music (a†2 a.m. session at KRUX studios.) A devotee of KCAC and KDKB, Mariah performed live numerous times on KDKB, wrote and voiced PSA’s. Then Wonderful Russ recruited her to be the voice of the fake “First Women’s National Credit and Trust Bank” ads.* They were the hilarious and irreverent brainchild of “Love Workshop” creators Russell Shaw and Todd Carroll. After four or five of the ads, KDKB got a curt “cease and desist” letter from the State for saying the bank had “a branch opening soon near you!”  Mariah, founder and editor of MusicandMoreAZ.com, still does voiceovers, studio vocals, freelance writing and occasional gigs. She was an officer on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2005 and from 2007 to 2010, Mariah was first onboard at sister station Radio Free Phoenix in 2005 and is proud to be part of the Deep Oldies air staff. Listen to Mariah weeknights from 8pm to 12am.

Andy Olson is a longtime Phoenix, AZ,  DJ that started Radio Free Phoenix in August, 2004. Radio Free Phoenix is a throwback to the free form style of early FM radio that once peppered the airwaves.  RFP returns to the heart, soul and passion that these great underground rock stations had. RFP plays Rock, Folk, Blues, Psychedelic, New Wave, Americana, Progressive, 60’s, 70’s,80’s, 90’s and new music too. But there was still something missing — and that was all the Oldies that have disappeared from the radio. Those great 50’s, 60’s and 70’s songs that you grew up with that are no longer played nor heard.  Deep Oldies went on the net on January 18th, 2010 to play these songs along with several DJ’s from Radio Free Phoenix. (Angela Allen & Charmi O’Connor)

Welcome to the First Day of Deep Oldies!

January 16th, 2010 / / categories: What's Up /

Well, the station has been in planning stages for quite a while–the music library is in — the air-staff has been assembled — the stream has been christened — and DO is now broadcast it’s unique mix of Deep Oldies. Welcome to the station and let me introduce the talent:

Angela Allen-  8am – 12 noon Monday through Friday

Angela Allen started in radio as a teen-ager in southern Indiana. She was fired from her first job for recording over the commercials as they played, a mistake easily made by anyone who doesn’t know to only push the green button, not the green button AND the red button. It was her first brush with reverse echo. She arrived in Phoenix on a cool early March in 1987 was slapped on the air in middays completely ignorant of being the replacement for a Valley legend, Mike Farrell. In spite of that, eventually listeners succumbed to her incessant lampooning of the morning man and decided she was okay. She got to meet famous people like Joe Bob Briggs, Bert Convy and Bart Starr, but more importantly, worked with Liz Boyle who would remember her with kindness the day she stood outside the Alpha Beta with an alms cup. After working in Tucson and getting involved with improv, she moved to Los Angeles, got her butt kicked in auditions, got to take classes from Nina Foch and returned to Indiana in 1992. Back to Phoenix in 94-95, she worked with Andy Olson, then back to Indiana by way of New Orleans. She’s proud to be involved with Deep Oldies and Radio Free Phoenix, and is very glad to be welcomed back into the congress of radio folks who have a passion to do this amazing thing. Hear Angela Allen weekdays from 8am-12 noon (MST) on Deep Oldies.

Charmi O’Connor-  12pm – 4pm  Monday through Friday

Charmi O’Connor consists completely of melted down vinyl 45’s and 33’s from the 50s, 60s, and 70s – and a mouth. And a love of great sounds that have emanated from rock and roll musicians around the world, all heard on Deep Oldies. Plus huge gratitude for having ears. She states of herself, “Rather than becoming the next world-famous physician or astronaut, in my formative years as a mini-skirted Beatles bird, I found my beak, ears and eyes firmly planted on radio/stereo emanating beloved rock lyrics and melody, the more / the louder, the better. Oh, and play some of it backwards, throw in some feedback and maybe a fuzz bass or a concrete bridge, and you will make me sob for joy even to this day.” As an aside, she always did receive lowered marks in school for her long sentences. She is heard on Deep Oldies weekdays 12noon-4pm, and on Radio Free Phoenix Saturdays 3-7pm (MST)

Charlie Ram – 4pm – 8pm  Monday through Friday

Charlie has a deep history with top 40 in the Phoenix – Tucson, Arizona area. His first job was at a little 250 watt smoke stack called KLRW in Tempe, AZ in 1959 — Charlie then hit the big time on KPHO Radio in 1961 — he was not only was the morning jock, but hosted Teen Swing – a popular TV program where local Phoenix girls danced with the DJ – a fling with a young girl did land Charlie in hot water which caused him to leave town overnight — he spent the rest of the 60’s in small towns around the country using such radio names as Big Chuck, Bull Ram and Handsome Charlie R. — Deep Oldies General Manager, Andy Olson found Charlie sleeping on a bus bench in downtown Phoenix in December this year — When Charlie asked for a handout — Andy recognized the voice — with a warm bed and three squares, a bit of rehabilitation and Charlie was ready to go — to blast back on the Phoenix radio scene — He’s been friends  (and drinking buddies) with those legendary rock stars of the 60’s   — listen to Charlie talk first hand about it on Deep Oldies weekdays 4pm-8pm – Monday thru Friday!
