Deep Oldies Celebrates 1st Birthday!

January 18th, 2011 / / categories: What's Up /

It was on this day, January 18th, 2010, that Deep Oldies went on the air on the net! The original airstaff consisted of Angela Allen, Charmi O’Connor, & the legendary Charlie Ram. An offspring of RadioFreePhoenix.com, Deep Oldies is much like RFP in that it plays songs that have been lost to the airwaves. Concentrating on 50’s, 60’s & early 70’s, Deep Oldies spends this day in tribute to 1 full year on the air!

Appreciation Day

Long time Radio Free Phoenix DJ, Dave Cooper, is now filling in for Mariah Fleming Monday through Friday from 8-12 midnight on Deep Oldies. Dave is bringing his easy-laid back sound to this time slot.  Mariah is taking some time off — we welcome the addition of Dave Cooper to the airstaff!!

This Christmas Eve on Deep Oldies  join us for the 22st Anniversary edition of “A Rock ‘N’ Roll Christmas”. From 6:00 p.m. Christmas Eve through Christmas day at 10:00 p.m. (MST). We will be playing an incredible deep and outrageous mix of Rock N Roll Christmas Tunes. Hosted by Andy Olson, this is the only show in the country that gathers together such a smorgasbord of absolutely cool Christmas Rock & Roll — Featuring top flight Christmas Rock mixed with a generous helping of parody & novelty holiday tunes along with great background information on the artists and songs. Since 1988 this show has been gracing the Phoenix Airwaves, first on KSLX, then KDKB, KZON and then back to KSLX, Radio Free Phoenix and now Deep Oldies!

The the self-proclaimed King Of The Road, Jimmy “HotRod” Phord joins the airstaff at Deep Oldies!

A unique radio talent, Jimmy Phord was born in Norway and moved to the USA when he was very young. Nicknamed “King Of The Road,” he  had trouble staying put in one area too long. He was the voice of the Zowpog, AZ oldies station “KPTZ” (pronounced Kapootz) in the late 70’s and early 80s and hung out with other famous DJ’s of that era,  Angela Allen, Charlie Ram and Ronnie Jensen. Respected in the radio industry, he was able to find an gig wherever he traveled. In June 1982, Jimmy disappeared after an embarrassing incident involving homemade Charlie Ram barbecue sauce and a tractor. He was missing for close to a decade until he slid back into Zowpog under the guise of Art Farmworth, Circle K clerk. This all changed when a member of the city council (while on a beer run), recognized Jimmy and started a movement to clear his name with authorities. This  allowed him to “Go Public” again. Jimmy “Hot Rod” Phord can now be heard on Sunday late morning and early afternoon from 11am to 3pm MST on Deep Oldies

The newest weekend DJ on Deep Oldies is Chris Herrick. Chris Herrick got the radio DJ bug at an early age watching DJs from KRIZ & KRUX do their thing at 8th Grade school dances and wound up being the DJ at neighborhood parties. Jump forward about 22 years to 1992 when Chris met Liz Boyle who was an instructor at the Academy of Radio & TV where Chris decided to take a shot at doing a radio career. Chris had a few odd production and board op jobs but never really got behind the mic until May 2009 when he finally listened (“imagine that, me listening”) to Liz telling him he’d be great. Chris decided to host the Radio Freedom program on RFP. He finally got his small home studio and made his debut on Deep Oldies on July 3rd 2010. In his off-air time, Chris does public address work at Westview High School basketball games and audio/video taping. Chris is heard on Deep Oldies from 6-10pm Saturdays, hosing the Deep Oldies Drive Inn, and 3-8pm (MST) Sundays hosting Deep Oldies’ Solid Gold Sunday.

The inimitable Landshark will keep you on the edge of dry land Monday through Friday from 4-8 pm (Arizona Time) on Deep Oldies.  With his main squeeze Moonflower and pet dog Cujo, he will keep you in stitches with his wily, wet humor! Email him at landshark@deepoldies.com

landshark

Landshark was born on Dry Land to three rich hippie parents. From birth Landshark found himself drawn to the beach and water. In his early teens he began being thrown out of neighbors’ pools and bathtubs. Which eventually led to a court order requiring Landshark to live within 50 miles of the beach. Soon Landshark began cruising the beaches of southern Cali only to find he needed money. Being a stand-up Shark comedian led to radio.

Since the late 70’s until present Landshark has frequented the beaches of the upper eastern seaboard to south Florida and the Gulf. Of course, So Cal is still by far his favorite! Now Landshark runs an internet radio station which bears the name of his birthplace, Arizona’s Real Rock Radio. During his off time he patrols the beaches and coves looking for unsuspecting listeners who need a dose of Deep Oldies. Remember if you meet him on the street be prepared to give up an appendage or at least buy him a refreshing beverage! (btw his favorite beverage: Cherry Coke Zero). Hear Landshark Weekdays 4-8pm (MST).

Former Radio Free Phoenix  DJ, Mariah Fleming, joins Deep Oldies Monday through Friday from 8pm – 12 Midnight. Mariah replaces Charlie Ram, who has left Deep Oldies for a new adventure elsewhere.  We wish Charlie luck!

Mariah is a third generation Arizona native, had her first “aha!” moment about radio at the plucky age of five when she discovered a translucent red 45 in her best friend’s dad’s record collection. When Mariah found out he played all those records the radio, she knew it was her destiny. When she shared her dream with Mr. DJ dad, with a condescending guffaw he informed her “Girls are not allowed to be on the radio!” Never tell an Irish redhead she “can’t” do something. Mariah’s passion for rock and roll hid beneath her strict Catholic school persona until her family moved from Tucson to Phoenix. At 14 she discovered the ‘big city’ and flipped between top forty rivals KRIZ and KRUX.  Her grandmother bought her a transistor radio complete with earpiece and leather case (perfect for hiding the radio under the bedcovers.) Then in the late ’60’s she discovered Little Willie Sunshine (Bill Compton) on the “KRUX Underground.” Bill Compton told her girls could too be in radio!
Compton nudged along the performer in Mariah by arranging her first studio recording of original music (a†2 a.m. session at KRUX studios.) A devotee of KCAC and KDKB, Mariah performed live numerous times on KDKB, wrote and voiced PSA’s. Then Wonderful Russ recruited her to be the voice of the fake “First Women’s National Credit and Trust Bank” ads.* They were the hilarious and irreverent brainchild of “Love Workshop” creators Russell Shaw and Todd Carroll. After four or five of the ads, KDKB got a curt “cease and desist” letter from the State for saying the bank had “a branch opening soon near you!”  Mariah, founder and editor of MusicandMoreAZ.com, still does voiceovers, studio vocals, freelance writing and occasional gigs. She was an officer on the Board of Directors of the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2005 and from 2007 to 2010, Mariah was first onboard at sister station Radio Free Phoenix in 2005 and is proud to be part of the Deep Oldies air staff. Listen to Mariah weeknights from 8pm to 12am.
