July 31st, 2024 / / categories: What's Up /

Chris “The Last Jedi” Herrick is returning from his journey into the wilderness to re-discover the meaning of being a member of the airstaff of Deep Oldies.

When asked what he discovered he simply replied, “The best station ever Deep Oldies is. Happy to be back, I am”

Chris returns to the Deep Oldies airwaves wiser and happier on August 5th, 2024. He is on Monday thru Friday from 7 to 10am AZ Mtn time…

It’s that time of year. We need to ask for donations from you, our listeners. All of us here at Deep Oldies and our parent station Radio Free Phoenix are volunteers. But we have bills to pay as well as licensing fees to be able to play the music you so love. Please go to our donation page and give what you can to keep us streaming the best Oldies on the internet airwaves, 24/7 always commercial free

Some sad news to report, our good friend and longtime radio buddy, David Lee passed away on January 27th, 2024. David will be deeply missed. Andy Olson first met Dave at KSTM in Phoenix. They also worked together at KSLX, and KOOL-FM. David did the morning show at KDKB for a time in the late 80’s and worked at many other stations around the country. He worked with us at Radio Free Phoenix in 2021 and helped launch Deep Oldies as Landshark in the early days of the station. In addition to his having his own internet radio station, most recently, he was doing a morning show for a radio station in Georgia. Dave had such a larger then life presence with his voice on the radio. Andy was working with him to bring him back to to Deep Oldies.  Dave, REST IN PEACE, all of us here at the Deep Oldies studio will miss you dearly…

Happy 14th Birthday Deep Oldies

January 24th, 2024 / / categories: What's Up /

On the morning of January 17th, 2010 Deep Oldies took to the internet airwaves. The brain child of owner Andy Olson to do for Oldies what Radio Free Phoenix did for rock was spot on. We play the oldies you will never hear not only on a broadcast oldies station (if you can find one) but on any other intrenet oldies station. All of this, commercial free…

HAPPY 14TH BIRTHDAY TO DEEP OLDIES and a special thanks to all of the volunteer staff members that got us here and continie to carry on the tradition….

Jimmy Buffett passed on Sept 1st, 2023. He was 76 years young. Jimmy was not only a musical legend, he was a lifestyle. All though his first charting song in 1974 was “Come Monday” it was the release of “Margaritaville” in 1976 that launched him into stardom. It also set in motion an entire movement he tagged as Parrotheads. They are the equivalent of Jerry Garcia’s Deadheads, which actually inspired the nick name for his fans.

In his career Jimmy released 29 studio albums, 9 compilation albums, 14 live albums and 8 specialty albums. He also released a total of 67 singles. But it was his concerts that was his greatest attraction. Parrotheads are a group of followers dressed up in cheeseburger hats and parrot hats (hence the name parrotheads). They also wear Hawaiian shirts, coconut bras and grass skirts, and that’s the male fans. In his concerts the crowd knew all the lyrics and bounced inflatable sharks, beach balls and anything to do with the beach and island life style.

In his latter years Jimmy opened chain of restaurants called Margaritaville that features his infamous “cheese burger in paradise” on the menu. He also opened a casino in cooperation with the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas and opened several resorts. His net worth at the time of his death was $1B making him the only musical artist other than Paul McCartney to be a billionaire.

Jimmy, REST IN PEACE! WE KNOW YOU ARE AT THE ONE PARTICULAR HARBOR…..

September 1st, 2023 / / categories: What's Up /

Uh-Oh….not what you think, contrary to someone in the music industry going on medical leave usually means treatment for drugs or alcohol…lol.

Not the case for the Caveman, Gary Laatsch. Gary is undergoing major ankle reconstruction and will be immobile for several weeks. Currently estimating about 8 weeks but the timeline for recovery is uncertain. Gary will be rejoining the Deep Oldies airwaves as soon as he is able….

The music will continue in his absence, and as always, COMMERCIAL FREE

Chris Herrick On Summer Break

May 31st, 2023 / / categories: What's Up /

Contrary to the rumors started by Charlie Ram, Chris Herrick is not in prison for trying to smuggle 8-track tapes in from China. He is on a summer journey to escape the heat of the Sonoran Desert. He willl back in his normal time slot when he returns at the end of July. Till then, the music continues to stream 24/7 commercial free on Deep Oldies

Harry Belafonte passed quietly in his home in upper Manhattan, he was 96 years old. Harry smashed racial barriers in the 1950s music and became a dynamic force in the civil rights movement,

When he broke into the music scene segregation was still widespread and Black faces were a rarity in movies and shortly after, television. Even though a few other black entertainers had also broken the racial barriers, none had made as much of a splash as he did, and for a few years no one in music of any race was bigger.

We’re sad to say, he’s gone away….

Rest in peace Harry Belafonte!
